By their nature, wind turbines need to be sited in harsh environments to gain full benefit from the strength of the wind. However, these conditions place enormous strains on the whole mechanism, with particular impact on the bearings, gearbox and generator.
Condition-based predictive maintenance (CBPM) using vibration sensors can therefore be used to monitor the performance of these crucial components to ensure they are maintained cost effectively and with the least amount of time out of action.
Monitran’s 2200 range is particularly applicable in the wind energy sector. Developed from its popular 1100 range specifically to cope with the high shock loading experienced in wind turbines, they have a standard operating range of ±80g with a rapid recovery time, and can withstand up to 10,000g. In addition, they have isolated AC outputs and good bias voltage stability.
For velocity monitoring Monitran recommends the 2285 series, which features DC outputs (4-20mA) proportional to RMS velocity. Outputs proportional to peak velocity are available on request.
