Mining

The benefits of vibration monitoring are as great in mining and extraction as they are in other heavy industries, but the harsh operating conditions can impose significantly greater burdens on the sensors, connectors and cabling employed. They need to operate reliably in an environment with high levels of moisture containing corrosive dissolved electrolytes, and high shock levels from the impact of flying debris from cutting, crushing and drilling machinery.

The types of machinery that can be monitored include motors, pumps, gearboxes, conveyors, and crushers.

As mines are classified as hazardous areas requiring a high level of protection, equipment must be intrinsically safe and certified for use in Group I hazardous areas.

An example of a Monitran constant current accelerometer suitable for use in this industry is the top-entry M1100I, which is certified to ATEX and IECEx Group I. Sealed to IP67, it is made from robust stainless steel throughout for long term vibration analysis. Sensors are also available in side-entry versions, which may be preferable in constricted areas.
